Gold Demand in India Sluggish as Rupee Slide Supports Price

A fall in overseas gold market failed to lift physical demand in India, the world's top consumer, as the depreciating rupee kept prices steady in the local market.

* Demand took a hit as buying declined during year-end holidays and the month is considered inauspicious for purchases, dealers said.

* At 3:05 p.m, the most-active February gold contract on the Multi Commodity Exchange was unchanged at 27,651 rupees per 10 grams.

* "Rupee has gone down considerably, and general feel among consumers is that gold will fall from the current levels. That's why demand is not improving," said a Mumbai-based dealer with a private bank dealing in bullion.

* "We can see improvement in demand if prices go down to $1,560 per ounce level. Even price rise above $1,650 level will attract buyers. Then people will change their medium term view," the dealer said. International gold was trading at $1,585.

* The on-going Khar mass also affected on purchases, dealers said. Khar Mass is a month in the Hindu calendar from December 16 to January 14 which is considered inauspicious for gold buying and starting new ventures.

* International spot gold edged lower on Wednesday, tracking falls in industrial metals and equities, as concerns about global economic growth weighed on market sentiment amid thin year-end trading volumes.

* The rupee, which plays an important role in determining the landed cost of dollar-quoted gold, weakened to 53.36 to the dollar from 53.015/025 at Tuesday's close, weighed by dollar demand from oil companies and weak shares.

* A Reuters poll earlier this month of 20 hedge fund managers, economists and traders showed international spot gold prices are expected to fall below $1,500 an ounce over the next three months and they are unlikely to retest September's all-time highs until later 2012 at the earliest.

At 1:15 p.m., the following were prices in rupees being quoted by RiddiSiddhi Bullion in the spot market:

Gold .999/10 grams 27,575 27,560

Silver .999/kg 52,100 52,230

At 2:38 p.m., following were prices (in rupees) on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd.

Feb gold 27,657 +6

Mar silver 52,705 -6

Christmas church bombings put global spotlight on 'Nigerian Taliban' (VIDEO)

The US is pledging to help Nigeria identify those responsible for a series of attacks that left at least 40 people dead on Christmas day.

Nigerian officials and world leaders offered condemnation on Monday for those responsible for a string of Christmas day bombings across Nigeria that killed at least 40 people and injured dozens. The worst attack occurred at a church near the nation?s capital of Abuja.

The attacks were pinned to Boko Haram, a Nigerian Islamic extremist organization that also claimed responsibility for deadly attacks in Nigeria during Christmas Eve last year.

Coming just days after 60 people died in a gun battle between the Islamic insurgents and government forces, the Christmas attack has shone harsh light to mounting tensions in Nigeria and raised concerns that more attacks could be soon to come.

?Nigeria must intensify its efforts in the area of security and guarantee freedom of movement and worship,? said the Rev. Isaac Achi, the priest from the bombed church, according to the Los Angeles Times.?

Including the Christmas bombing, Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for attacks that resulted in the death of 504 people in Nigeria this year alone. The group, which has been nicknamed the ?Nigerian Taliban,? aims to bring the African nation under Islamic law, reports the Daily Telegraph. Africa?s biggest oil producer and most populous nation, Nigeria?s northern region is predominately Muslim while the southern half of the country is mostly Christian.

Though Boko Haram has existed since 2002, Australia?s Sky News reports that violence attributed to the group has risen sharply in recent months. In a series of increasingly complex bombings the group has killed more than 280 people since November. The government has made a number of well-publicized arrests of Boko Haram members and raided some of their bomb making factories, but it appears to have had little impact on the group?s operational capabilities.

Obama nominates 2 to Federal Reserve Board

(AP) ? A vacationing President Barack Obama on Tuesday nominated a Harvard University professor and a former Treasury official under President George H.W. Bush ? a Democrat and a Republican ? to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

In a statement from Hawaii, where he was vacationing with his family, Obama praised Jeremy Stein and Jerome Powell for agreeing to serve his administration at a critical moment for the U.S. economy.

"Their distinguished backgrounds and experience coupled with their impressive knowledge of economic and monetary policy make them tremendously qualified to serve in these important roles," Obama said.

Stein is an economics professor at Harvard, where he teaches courses in finance. His research focuses on the behavior of stock prices, corporate investment and financial regulation. He previously served in the Obama administration as a senior adviser to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Powell is a visiting scholar at the Washington-based Bipartisan Policy Center, where he has focused on federal and state fiscal issue. He served in the first Bush administration as undersecretary of finance at the Treasury Department, where he was responsible for policy on financial institutions and the treasury debt market.

In nominating both a Democrat and Republican to the seven-member Fed board, Obama could be trying to head off a confirmation fight in the Senate. The White House has previously accused Republicans of purposely blocking qualified nominees.

That includes Nobel Prize-winning economist Peter Diamond, who was nominated to the Fed board by Obama in 2009, then re-nominated to the post in 2010.

Republicans blocked a full Senate vote on Diamond's confirmation and questioned his practical experience and research. Diamond is considered an authority on Social Security, pensions and taxation. Diamond ultimately withdrew his nomination, citing frustration with the process and contending that Republicans failed to recognize the value of experience analyzing what causes unemployment.

The Fed's board of governors is made up of seven members who serve 14-year terms. Chairman Ben Bernanke is one of the seven members, though his term as chairman is limited to four years.

All members of the Fed's governing board serve on its policymaking committee, known as the Federal Open Market Committee. The FOMC wields the Fed's most powerful tool: It sets a benchmark short-term interest rate that affects the rates consumers pay for mortgages, auto loans and other borrowing.

The 12-member committee includes the seven members of the board and five of the 12 regional bank presidents. The President of the New York Fed, with its proximity to Wall Street, is a permanent member of the committee. Four additional regional presidents serve one-year terms on a rotating basis.

Obama's nominations come as the policymaking committee shifts toward greater support for Bernanke's efforts to revive the economy by keeping interest rates low.

In September, the Fed said it would swap some of its short-term Treasury securities for longer-term bonds, to try to push long-term rates lower. That followed the Fed's announcement in August that it planned to keep its benchmark rate at a record low of nearly zero until at least mid-2013, as long as the economy remains weak.
