Facebook co-founder sells 450,000 shares

Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz shed 450,000 shares of Facebook in the past few days for proceeds of about $9 million ? a tiny chunk of his total stake.

Moskovitz was Mark Zuckerberg's Harvard roommate when they founded Facebook in 2004. He disclosed in a regulatory filing late Tuesday that he sold the shares on Friday, Monday and Tuesday in blocks of 150,000.

He sold the shares for $18.79 to $20.08 each for proceeds of nearly $9 million.

Moskovitz, 28, left Facebook in 2008 and started Asana, whose software helps manage projects.

He did not sell any stock in Facebook's IPO. He still owns more than 133 million shares. Based on the filing, he could sell 7 million more shares he converted from Class B to Class A.

Republicans worry Representative Todd Akin's ill-conceived comments about pregnancy and rape will cost them a Senate race in Missouri. Akin's comments played into an assertion of Democrats, that Republicans are out of touch with women's rights.

Democrats, eager to capitalize on?Akin?s?comments, issued a burst of fundraising appeals ? subject line: ?Legitimate Rape? ? and even President Barack Obama weighed in, saying the congressman?s statement was hard to comprehend.

But?Akin, while apologizing, insisted he would stay in the race, one of a handful that could determine which party runs the Senate after November. He made his own money pitch, asking donors to chip in $3 apiece ?as a sign of support of my continued candidacy.?

The six-term congressman, who represents part of the St. Louis suburbs, drew an outraged response from members of both parties after a Sunday interview in which he explained his opposition to abortion, even in the case of rape.?Akin?said such pregnancies were ?really rare? because ?if it?s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.?

The near-panic in GOP ranks Monday reflected a political calculation;?Akin?s?comments played precisely to an assertion Democrats have pursued relentlessly ? that Republicans are retrograde and insensitive to women?s rights.

And it did not require a great leap of imagination to tie?Akin?to GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, who has sponsored anti-abortion legislation with?Akin?and, unlike Romney, opposes the procedure even in cases of rape and incest.

Democrats eagerly highlighted that connection Monday, ignoring the fact that very few Republican ? and certainly neither Romney nor Ryan ? publicly stood up to defend?Akin?or his remarks.

?He should understand that his words with regards to rape are words that I can?t defend, that we can?t defend, and we can?t defend him,? Romney said in an interview with television station WMUR in Manchester, N.H.

Obama weighed in during a surprise visit to the White House briefing room.

?Rape is rape,? he told reporters. ?The idea that we should be parsing, qualifying, slicing what types of rape we?re talking about doesn?t make sense to the American people. It certainly doesn?t make sense to me.?

Despite Romney?s swift repudiation, Obama said?Akin?s?comments ?underscore ... why we shouldn?t have a bunch of politicians, the majority of whom are men, making health care decisions on behalf of women.?

In a radio interview Monday with media personality and former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee ? one of Akin?s?few defenders ? the congressman said his remarks were ill-conceived and wrong and he apologized. ?Let me be clear,??Akin?said. ?Rape is never legitimate. It is an evil act.?

He insisted, however, he would not abandon the race against Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill, even with clear signs that many in the Republican Party wished he would do just that.

Poll: Now that Nikon has gone Android, does Apple need to get into the camera business?

Nikon has announced a new Coolpix 5800c digital pocket camera, but one with a twist -- it runs the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.. That means not only can you take photos, but once you've taken them, you can do pretty much anything with them you could do with smartphone photos, including processing them and sharing them to your favorite social networks.

Now the iPhone 4S already has a pretty great camera, and who knows what the iPhone 5 will be packing, so do dedicated point-and-shoots even matter anymore? And this Nikon will be running a relatively old version of Android, quite a bit behind the current Android 4.1 Jelly Bean that all our friends over at Android Central are raving about. So... should this even matter to Apple?

I don't see Apple licensing out iOS to Canon anytime soon, but I don't see them making a traditional, dedicated camera any more either. That's the past and Apple is all about the future. We asked our resident product rendering expert, John Anastasiadis, what he thought. The image above is what he came up with -- using an iPhone as the "brain" for a camera attachment. It would slide onto a next generation iPhone and add profoundly better optics to the already excellent internet connectivity and interface.

Apple's late co-founder, Steve Jobs famously said he wanted to revolutionize photography the way he had computers, phones, tablets, and music. Did he mean making a camera, or making Apple's existing digital devices better at photography than conventional cameras? Or something else entirely?

Big Facebook investor dumping his shares

Early investor and current Facebook director Peter Thiel has unloaded a majority of his stake in the social network. Michael Pachter, Wedbush Securities, explains what this means to investors.

Peter Thiel, one of Facebook?s earliest investors and a member of the social network?s board, has sold the majority of his shares in the company, according to a regulatory filing.

Thiel sold about $400 million worth of shares last week as the first part of a so-called ?lockup? period for key investors in the company came to an end. The period, which lasted for 90 days after the social network?s public offering on May 18, prevented some early investors and insiders from selling millions of shares they own in the company.

Thiel?s stock sale is not necessarily a response to Facebook?s swooning stock price, since he set it up as part of a 10b5-1 trading plan put in place ahead of Facebook?s first public stock offering in May.

However, the sale comes at a difficult time for the company. Facebook?s share price has lost over 50 percent of its value since its IPO, and it fell to a new all-time low of $18.75 Monday morning before recovering in afternoon trading. It was lower again in early trading Tuesday.

CNBC?s Jim Cramer said Tuesday he believes that Thiel could have cancelled the stock sale if he wished. It would have behooved Facebook?s management to ask Thiel to reconsider the sale, Cramer added.

Thiel first invested $500,000 in Facebook in 2004. He sold about 22 million shares in last week?s stock sale and has now unloaded most of his investment in the company.

A co-founder of Internet payment company PayPal, Thiel serves on Facebook?s board of directors, alongside other technology sector leaders, such as the venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and Reid Hoffman, who is a co-founder of LinkedIn.

Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities and a proponent of Facebook, told CNBC that he thinks Thiel should now resign from Facebook?s board given his ?lack of commitment? to the company.

?Any investor who thinks Facebook is a sinking ship would look at Thiel and think the rats are jumping off the sinking ship; it?s time for me to get off as well,? he said.

Facebook?s hotly-anticipated IPO went sour in May, marred by technical problems on the Nasdaq stock market. Facebook has traded below its $38 offering price ever since.

The market has turned against social media stocks since Facebook?s botched IPO.

A report in The Wall Street Journal this week said some of the early investors in daily deals website Groupon are selling their stakes in the company, adding to a general lack of faith in companies that have led an expected new Internet boom.

Over 500 rhinos could perish this year: monitors

Global wildlife monitoring network TRAFFIC warned Tuesday that 515 rhinos could perish by the end of the year if no action is taken to stem the illicit trade in rhino horns.

In its latest report, the agency said that with a total of 281 animals killed as of July, there was a "predicted loss of 515 by year end if current poaching rates continue".

South Africa, home to about three quarters of Africa's 20,000 or so white rhinos and 4,800 critically endangered black rhinos, has in recent years witnessed an unprecedented spike in sophisticated, violent and organised rhino-related criminal activities.

Last year 448 rhinos were killed compared to 13 animals in 2007.

South Africa has lately scaled up its fight against illegal poaching and trade in rhinos horns, arresting 176 suspects so far this year, more than the 165 arrested in the 12 months of 2010.

"It seems this year that efforts are begining to pay off. We have seen a great increase in arrests. We are also beginning to see some significant sentencing," said Jo Shaw, co-author of the report.

But she warned that even with the successful stories of high-value arrests the criminal syndicates appeared generally to be a step ahead -- better equipped, well funded.

"As anti-poaching security levels are stepped up, the poaching gangs become more aggressive and increasingly sophisticated," she said.

The report named Vietnam as the worst offender fuelling the trade in the black market for rhino horns.

"The bottom line is that we are not close to ending this crisis yet, we are probably going to get record numbers this year," warned the report's co-author Tom Milliken, who is also an expert on rhinos at TRAFFIC.

The grounded horn, which is believed by some to cure cancers, has taken on a new use and is now being pushed as a recreational drug mixed with drinks at elite "rhino wine associations" parties in the belief that it cures hangover.

The report says the only way to end illegal rhino hunting is to cut off the demand, by pushing Vietnam to boldly show commitment and decisively enforce laws that prohibit trade in the horns.

It was revealed at the launch of the report that South Africa and Vietnam are set to sign a landmark deal to help stem rhino poaching and the illicit trade in rhino horns.

"I think the heat is clearly on Vietnam. I think we are going to see some changes. The good news today is that the MOU with South Africa is about to be signed," said Milliken.

The network did not give details of the memorandum of understanding, but it is believed to centre on law enforcement.

Vietnam's deputy foreign affairs minister Le Loung Minh was last week in South Africa where he held talks over illegal wildlife hunting, trade and trafficking with his counterpart Ebrahim Ebrahim.

There were some "serious shortcomings" and not so great coordination in South Africa's response to rhino crime, "but the will to do right is with us", said Mavuso Msimang, an expert on rhinos in South Africa's department of environmental affairs.

Rhino crimes are receiving heavier sentences and there is now a dedicated prosecutor to handle such crimes.

The report, titled The South African-Vietnam Rhino Trade Nexus, also pointed at a worrying development where game ranch operators and custodians of rhinos have been roped into the crime syndicates to become "rhino horn dealers of some description".
