ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greek police say they have detained 18 union members of the state electricity company's union, including the union president, for illegally occupying a building housing the company's computer systems.

The unionists had occupied the building for about four hours when riot police stormed the premises shortly before midnight (2100 GMT).

In a message to the media, union leader Nikos Fotopoulos had said the unionists' purpose was to find data concerning an unpopular property levy imposed last year and paid through consumers' electricity bills. He said the union planned to present evidence Monday that large property owners did not pay the levy.

Several dozen union members have gathered to protest their colleagues' arrest outside police headquarters.

Police say the detained unionists are charged with breach of the peace.
