Wichita construction jobs down 9 percent from a year ago

The Wichita metropolitan area had 9 percent fewer construction jobs in June than it did in June 2012, ranking it near the bottom of 339 U.S. metropolitan areas based on percentage loss, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released today by the Associated General Contractors of America.

Wichita had 13,800 construction, mining and logging jobs last month versus 15,200 a year earlier. Kansas City, Kan., and Topeka had 8 percent and 2 percent gains, respectively.

Statewide, there were 66,700 construction, mining and logging jobs in June, down 1 percent. Construction-only jobs, which are not reported for Kansas MSAs, slipped 2 percent, to 56,400.

Construction employment increased in more than half of the U.S. metro areas, AGC says.

The largest job gains were in the Boston area, which added 9,900 jobs, a 19 percent gain, and the Houston area, which gained 9,900 jobs, up 6 percent.

The largest job losses were in Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, Calif., where numbers fell 5,500 jobs, or 9 percent.
