The American Swedish Historical Museum To Host Its Annual ...

Nothing says summer like a seafood-centric, sunshine-filled party. (Photo courtesy American Swedish Historical Museum)

The American Swedish Historical Museum welcomes another taste of summertime Nordic traditions with their annual Summer Crayfish Party taking place Friday, August 17.

Originating in Sweden, the century old practice came about when government law prohibited the catching of crayfish, except for a period of time in August, due to overharvesting of the delicacy.

While the ban is no longer in effect, the crayfish parties, or Kraftskivas, are still celebrated outdoors throughout Sweden in the late summer with festive lights, paper lanterns, bibs and plenty of alcohol.

If you?re cray-cray for crayfish, the event begins at 6 p.m. with hors d?oeuvres and drinks in the museum courtyard, followed by a festive dinner stocked with the main dish of the evening cooked Swedish-style in salted water with dill. Salads, cheese, meatballs and dessert pair with the feast for an oh-so Swedish experience.

Tickets are $45 for museum and the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce-Philadelphia members and $50 for non-members.

Reservations are necessary and must be placed by August 10 online or by calling (215) 389-1776.
