Western Michigan University has been awarded a $2 million federal grant to support first-year undergraduate students who are migrant or seasonal farm workers or the children of such workers.

The Kalamazoo school's Division of Multicultural Affairs recently received its first check from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Migrant Education.

It'll be applied to Western Michigan's first College Assistance Migrant Program in the fall.

Division of Multicultural Affairs director Diana Hernandez tells the Kalamazoo Gazette she's "delighted" to be getting the grant money.

Hernandez says she first started applying for it in 2003.

Programs such as the one Western Michigan will have in the fall provide academic assistance, tutoring, career counseling, financial assistance and personal or group counseling to migrant and seasonal farm workers or their children.
